Updated with Tom’s Notes Included:

01 — Performance & Artistic Programs

Concert works and interdisciplinary performances

Core Performance Programs

  • Transcultural Percussion — Global solo performance integrating frame drums, balafon, Indian systems, and live looping
→ Tom notes this title may be too tied to the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts structure and may not function as the long-term umbrella title.
→ Possible direction: broader category such as Solo Percussion, with multiple sub-programs underneath.
→ “The Drum: Ancient Traditions Today” may either become:

    • a legacy anchor title

    • a sub-program

    • or a repositioned/reworked version of this category.

  • Handpan Illuminations — Meditative, immersive concert focused on tone and resonance
→ Tom wants to rethink this title and move away from a handpan-specific identity.
→ The actual focus is broader:

    • frame drums

    • metric modulation

    • resonance

    • meditative rhythmic states

    • immersive sound experiences.
→ May eventually move more naturally under the BioRhythms section instead of existing solely as a concert program.
→ Tom also notes there will likely be a record supporting this work.

  • The Art of the Duo — Improvisational collaborations built on real-time musical dialogue
→ Tom feels very good about this title and direction.
→ This is an actively developing long-term artistic platform and should likely remain stable within the structure.

Visual / Film Programs

  • Sounds You Can See — Music + abstract visual performance exploring sound and perception
→ Tom likes this functioning as an umbrella brand/category rather than only a single project title.
    → Possible structure:

    • Sounds You Can See

      • Live Film Score Concerts

      • abstract visual works

      • multimedia projects

      • future visual collaborations.
        → Potential dropdown/navigation category candidate.

  • Live Film Score Concerts — Silent and avant-garde films with live percussion scoring
    → Structurally approved by Tom.
→ May eventually live underneath the “Sounds You Can See” umbrella structure.

Future Additions Under Performance

  • Max Roach / Jazz-Focused Solo Program (Working Title: “Maxism”)
→ Tom is considering adding a more explicitly jazz-centered solo performance project.
    → May connect to:

    • existing material

    • future touring

    • potential solo recording project.
      → Still exploratory.

02 — Sound, Wellness & BioRhythms

Rhythm-based experiences for focus, balance, and connection

  • BioRhythms | Live Sound Journey — Immersive sound experience combining percussion, tone, and entrainment
→ Tom feels positive about the overall direction of this category.
→ This area may absorb or connect more directly with the current “Handpan Illuminations” concept.

  • Sound Meditation & Listening Sessions — Guided listening for calm, clarity, and awareness
    → Structurally approved.

  • Rhythm-Based Wellness Programs — Interactive rhythm sessions for coordination and group connection
    → Structurally approved.

  • Yoga & Movement Integration — Live sound combined with breathwork and movement
→ Tom wants this positioned more carefully.
→ Currently not a consistent standalone offering.
    → Better framed as:

    • collaborative offering

    • guest-based format

    • optional integrated experience
rather than a primary core program.

03 — Education & Professional Development

Study & Mentorship

  • Private Instruction — High-level individualized training (in-person / online)
    → Approved structurally.

  • Drumming Through Cultures and Time — Cultural + historical exploration with live demo
→ Tom specifically notes this works well.

  • Music as Diplomacy — Music as a tool for cultural exchange
    → Approved structurally.

    → Approved structurally.

Clinics & Workshops

  • American Approach to World Percussion — Integrated global rhythm system
    → Approved structurally.

  • Looping & Digital Percussion — Live looping and hybrid performance systems
→ Tom would like to remove or replace this for now.
→ He feels the field has evolved beyond where his current focus sits and would prefer a stronger representation of his current strengths.

  • Global Rhythm Workshops — Group rhythm, interaction, and performance
→ Tom wants this clarified as:

    • open to all musicians

    • not percussion-specific.
