01: Clinics, Masterclasses, Residencies

Education Through Rhythm: A Global Perspective

Clinic Topic 1: An American Approach to World Percussion

In this dynamic clinic, Tom Teasley seamlessly fuses rhythmic concepts from across the globe into a cohesive and accessible framework. Participants are guided through drumming techniques drawn from diverse traditions — including the Middle East, Far East, and India — while exploring their practical applications in contemporary performance. The workshop is structured into four key sections: palm drums, finger drums, jingle drums, and shakers. Specific techniques are introduced and integrated across instruments such as Djembe, Cajon, Doumbek, Frame Drums, shakers, and a variety of tambourines.

Tom further bridges global percussion with Western traditions by demonstrating how these instruments relate to the American drum set, using four-part coordination. Drawing on his unique approach, he adapts concepts from world percussion and applies them directly to the drum set, offering a fresh and creative lens for kit players. This includes techniques and phrasing developed on traditional instruments, reimagined through pedals, sticks, and coordinated independence.

The clinic incorporates well-known pedagogical resources, including Progressive Steps to Syncopation by Ted Reed, Stick Control by George Lawrence Stone, and The New Breed by Gary Chester. Participants will also explore the use of hi-hats, foot-controlled tambourines, cowbells, and blocks, enhancing coordination and rhythmic fluency. Exercises inspired by Tom’s mentor, Joe Morello, along with rudimental techniques, are applied to demystify world percussion for Western musicians. Much of this material is featured in Tom’s acclaimed book/DVD set An American Approach to World Percussion, published by Alfred Music. (PDF worksheets available upon request.)

Clinic Topic 2
: Integrating Acoustic Percussion with Live Looping & Digital Technology

This innovative clinic offers a deep dive into Tom Teasley’s solo looping performances, which have captivated audiences worldwide. Digital looping — the real-time recording and layering of musical phrases — allows Tom to create the rich texture of a full ensemble using just his own performance. In this workshop, Tom shares his creative process, demonstrating how he builds orchestration, texture, and arrangements through the interplay of ancient percussion, electronic instruments, wind instruments, keyboards, and the human voice.

Participants gain insight into both the artistic and technical aspects of looping, including the mechanics of producing clean, effective loops and the musical strategies for constructing compelling performances. Though often presented to percussionists, the principles Tom explores are universally applicable to any instrumentalist interested in expanding their sonic palette through digital looping technology.

Yoga Meets Percussion Events

Tom Teasley and Steve Wolf have created a compelling fusion of live music and yoga that draws participants into a deeply immersive, multisensory journey of healing and inner alignment. Their collaborations — spanning formats from Chair Yoga to Yoga Nidra — seamlessly blend Steve’s decades of experience in mind-body practices with Tom’s expressive, global percussion. The result is a richly layered experience that harmonizes breath, movement, and rhythm, offering not only physical restoration, but emotional release and spiritual grounding.

Their work has been featured at high-profile events such as the Castleton Festival and is also available online via Insight Timer, providing an accessible window into the uniquely calming and transformative synergy of guided yoga and live sound.

The duo’s Yoga Percussion experiences have also been presented at Radiance Yoga in Alexandria, Virginia, where they’ve led popular New Year’s Day sessions designed to reset the nervous system and cultivate intention for the year ahead. In these events, Steve guides participants through restorative poses while Tom performs a live, improvised soundscape using an array of hand percussion instruments, flutes, and subtle electronics. The resulting atmosphere is both grounding and transcendent — a rare balance that invites deep stillness while awakening sensory awareness.

What sets Teasley and Wolf apart is their intuitive collaboration: each moment is co-created in real time, with music and movement responding to one another in fluid conversation. This improvisational quality infuses their sessions with a sense of presence and authenticity that is difficult to replicate. Whether in a studio setting or through a digital stream, their events offer a powerful reminder that healing isn’t just a solo pursuit — it can also be a shared, sonic ritual.
