Drums Across the Continents -- African Balaphon, Middle-Eastern Doumbek, and Ghatam from India combined
Three instruments from three far-flung cultures come together, and out tumble waves of new music, texture and sound.
The balaphon, with its gentle wooden tones, balances the sharp ring of the doumbek, coming from a continent away. The ghatam rolls in, flashy on the surface but with deep jug-like sonics, evoking ideas of thick, gigantic bubbles popping.
The three-way meeting offers endless possibilities for variety -- especially when the musician freely swaps in playing techniques from different traditions.
Watch for the scratching, slapping and guitar-flourish techniques you've seen in the other tutorials -- Tom puts them to work in many instances here.
This inter-continental clip comes from the chapter called "Performances" on the teaching video Global Fusion Percussion.
