Arabian Rhythms Meet American Grooves
![]() |
After my recent tour to Jerusalem during Ramadan and just before Yom Kippur I returned to the Persian Gulf island of Bahrain. While there Charles Williams and I performed at the beautifully renovated (Shaikh Ebrahim Center). I was once again reunited with my friends and master drummers from Bahrain. We performed traditional Pearl Diving rhythms infused with my American jazz and funk approach to playing the Arabic tabla. We also performed a concert at the Royal University for Women in Bahrain. I visited the Royal Police Band and presented an informal snare drum workshop and attended an amazing concert by faculty at the Bahrain Music Institute. Once again I was reminded how rhythm is indeed the universal language that transcends race, creed and nationality. There are plans underway to facilitate my dream of bringing these master musicians and great friends to the U.S from Bahrain. Stay tuned for further details!

Next Charles Williams and I traveled to the Saudi Arabian cities of Riyadh, Jeddah and Dhahran to perform concerts and workshops. We presented concerts at the Embassy of Riyadh and Consulate of Jeddah. In addition we performed at various Literary Clubs. It was a great honor to have our performances among the recent sanctioned music performances and to have both men and women as audience members in the same room! While in Saudi Arabia I had the pleasure of performing with master oud player Hamed Alrashaid. I'm very grateful to the American Embassies of Bahrain and Riyadh and the American Consulates of Dhahran and Jeddah for these recent opportunities.
I have posted pictures and video on my Facebook page.

From The Middle East To Virginia
Just after returning from Saudi Arabia I packed the van and headed to the rural area of Grundy, VA. This is an underserved area that rarely received cultural programs. It was very special to share my love of music and rhythm with these receptive audiences. While there I performed six school programs as well as an evening concert of solo percussion. It was a real treat to share with this audience my experiences, both musical and personal that I had in the Middle East. I also traveled to Roanoke, VA for some teaching and planning for a summer residency. My last stop was in Winchester, VA where I performed two children's concerts on behalf of the Winchester Symphony Orchestra at the newly renovated and beautiful Alamo Theater. All of these Virginia audiences were very interested in the music and culture from the Middle East that I was able to share and left with a better understanding and appreciation for the rich culture and heritage from that part of the world.
Word-Beat Returns To NYC
On December 14th, Charles and I performed once again in NYC in Grennwich Village's historic Cornelia Street Café. We are delighted to perform on the series "Serial Underground" presented by The Composers Collaborative Inc.
I am especially looking forward to collaborating with an amazing and creative musician, Jed Distler. It is always great fun and an inspiring experience to present Word-Beat in NYC where the spoken word and music has such a strong history and the hometown of our favorite poet, Langston Hughes. Our sincere thanks go thanks to Jed Distler and Celia Cooke for their support and kind hospitality.
World Class Percussion Education in the Washington, DC Area
"Think you're a hopelessly Westernized drummer? Can't think outside of "2 and 4" on the snare? Fear not, Teasley is here. ...[He] not only introduces us to different world percussion styles (Southern Italian, Brazilian, South Indian, Egyptian, and more), but how we might apply rudiments and other rhythmic patterns to such instruments as tambourine, shaker, doumbek, frame drum and ultimately the drum kit [He] challenges you to become not only a more technically adept drummer, but a more creative and even innovative one."

"Thanks for a great clinic. I can't wait to start trying some of these exercises myself."
– John Beck
Eastman School of Music
"Tom presented a TERRIFIC Clinic at the University of Maryland.... Tom certainly has that rare gift; making that quick connection with students and spreading his enthusiasm for his area of expertise. The clinic was wonderfully organized and our students also received plenty of 'hands on' time - which was great. Our students are still talking about it!!"

Rare D.C. Area Performance New Years Eve
I invite all of my D.C. area friends to celebrate the New Year at Alexandria's First night celebration. Charles and I will be at the Alexandria Red Cross Building with shows beginning at 7 PM.
We will be performing an exciting selection of Harlem Renaissance poetry, Rumi and more. We will be sharing our Middle East experiences with words and rhythms to span the globe. I will be sharing some of my new instruments and skills I picked up with in the Middle East. Please come and help us celebrate 2010 in style. We look forward to seeing you all there!
