Live soundtrack to 'Sherlock Jr."
Nov/7/2018 7:30 pmill Center is proud to welcome Tom Teasley as part of our Street Scenes concert series, focusing on new music composed by emerging DC jazz artists, curated by Burnett Thompson. Teasley will perform a live soundtrack to Buster Keaton’s film “Sherlock Jr” and Hans Richter’s “Ghosts Before Breakfast” followed by a Q&A session. Tom Teasley, described in the Washington Post as “a multi-instrumental genius,” maintains a unique career as a solo percussionist, composer and collaborator. He is the 2016 Drummie Award winner for “World Percussionist of the Year” by Drum! Magazine. Tom is a three time Helen Hayes Theatre Award recipient for outstanding sound design (seven nominations). He tours frequently throughout the world performing and presenting clinics for the endorsers, Vic Firth, Sabian, Remo, Gon Bops and others. His educational book/DVD, An American Approach to World Percussion, is published by Alfred Publishing. Tom is the 2012, 2013, 2014 and 2015 WAMA (Washington Area Music Award) World Music Instrumentalist of the year. He is a six-time recipient of a Fulbright-Hayes grant for historic performances in the Middle East. As an artist-in-residence at the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, he has collaborated with the National Symphony as both a soloist and composer. He has been the subject of numerous feature articles in both Modern Drummer Downbeat and Drum! magazines. You can find him online at www.tomteasley.com. “No instrument has a limitation for him. Give Tom a bass drum, a snare drum, and a djembé, and he’ll give you part Stravinsky, part Art Blakey.”– Bruce Wittet, Modern Drummer Doors open at 6:30pm. Join us for a post-concert wine reception with the artist.

Tom Teasley performs live soundtrack to "The Cabinet of Dr Caligari"
Aug/13/2017 3:00 pmThe Cabinet of Dr. Caligari directed by Robert Wiene written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer featuring live music by Tom Teasley Constellation Theatre's presentation of The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari will be an immersive event for audiences as well as a showcase for the talents of internationally acclaimed musician Tom Teasley. Combining ancient instruments with digital technology, Teasley's original score will interplay with the film and its bold visual style. For the first time, Teasley will use an electronic analog synthesis reminiscent of twentieth-centry French composer Edgar Varese, also known as "The Father of Electronic Music." Teasley will also reflect the angular optics of the film using odd meter and additive rhythms inspired by both Igor Stravinsky and Middle Eastern traditions. Lastly, in keeping with Tom's interest in current sounds, he will borrow contemporary urban rhythmic language from fellow Washington D.C. native DJ Spooky, who has also created an alternative score to the film. A dangerous hypnotist uses a sleepwalker to commit murder in this quintessential work of German Expressionist cinema. Set in a jagged urban landscape and told with iconic visual style, this horror film reveals the fine line between sanity and madness. Award-winning percussionist Tom Teasley returns for a third time to create a powerful live underscore for Constellation's silent film series.
